More tools for difficult decisions

Business decisions are often made under uncertainty. Information is missing, goals compete and some assumptions seem more plausible than they really are. That is why Peak Atlas is developing a handbook of 100 thinking principles designed to make such situations easier to structure.

The book is conceived as a collection of clearly explained thinking tools. Readers should be able to understand which question a principle answers, when it helps and where its limits lie.

Looking at problems from several angles

Key topics include identifying bottlenecks, testing fundamental assumptions and weighing alternatives. Tools like these direct attention to different aspects of the same problem.

An example: when growth stalls, the bottleneck perspective can help to first look for the point in the system that is actually limiting. Considering opportunity costs adds the question of which other use of time or capital is given up for a decision. Both perspectives can shed light on the same situation without having to deliver the same answer.

Application and limits belong together

The chapters are meant to explain each principle using concrete situations from business leadership and personal development. This includes typical thinking errors and indications of when a method is easily stretched too far.

A framework is an aid to thinking. It relieves the decision-maker neither of checking the facts nor of responsibility. That is why the concept also includes the question of which information would change a preliminary judgment. This leaves room to correct a decision in light of new insights.

Learn visually and look things up quickly

The planned design combines concise text with vivid illustrations. The images are meant to make relationships, trade-offs and chains of cause and effect visible. A clear chapter structure should make it possible to read the book from start to finish as well as to look up individual thinking tools directly.

The handbook is in development. The final selection, the final title and the release will be defined as work progresses.
